Pair of doe bookends in black marble and gilded metal – Art Deco style

Elegant pair of vintage deer bookends, combining animal sculptures in patinated metal with golden reflections and imposing polished black marble bases.

The two pieces form a particularly successful composition: one depicts a reclining doe, head raised and a paw delicately extended, while the second depicts a standing doe in an elegant posture.

The modeling of the animals is stylized and elegant, with long necks, slender silhouettes and deliberately smooth surfaces that catch the light and bring out the nuances of the metallic patina.

The sculptures rest on heavy rectangular bases of black marble, extended by two matching vertical uprights. The marble features beautiful contrasting natural veins, mixing deep black, white, and broad golden beige hues.

The combination of black marble and gilded metal, as well as the stylized treatment of the deer, strongly evokes the Art Deco decorative repertoire. In the absence of a signature or element allowing for certain dating, this pair is presented as being in Art Deco style, probably made during the 20th century.

Each bookend weighs approximately 1.6 kg, giving them excellent stability and allowing them to effectively hold a row of books.

The sculptures show a nice old patina as well as some traces and variations in hue related to age and use.

The marble retains a very nice polished appearance. Some traces are consistent with the age of the set and do not affect its stability or decorative interest.
