De Bruyn Faience Factory

An emblematic factory in Fives-Lille

The De Bruyn faience factory, located in Fives-Lille in northern France, was one of the most important manufacturers of French ceramic production at the end of the 19th century. Founded by Antoine Gustave De Bruyn, a potter of Belgian origin born in Leuven, it established itself in Lille in 1864 and quickly experienced significant development.

At that time, Fives was a rapidly expanding industrial center, offering a favorable environment for large-scale production. The De Bruyn faience factory employed up to several hundred workers and specialized in the manufacture of decorative and utilitarian earthenware.

Characteristic production: slipware and naturalistic decorations

The renown of the De Bruyn house largely rested on its production of slipware, a technique consisting of using liquid clay paste to create relief decorations.

From the 1880s, the factory developed a wide range of objects:

  • zoomorphic or anthropomorphic pitchers
  • vases and cache-pots with floral decoration
  • planters and decorative objects

These pieces, often colorful and expressive, were fully in line with the Art Nouveau movement, with motifs inspired by nature and organic forms.

An industrial history marked by market evolution

After significant growth at the end of the 19th century, the De Bruyn faience factory went through the economic changes of the 20th century.

The company continued its activity until the middle of the century, before being sold in 1950, and then definitively ceased its activity in 1962.

This disappearance explains today the exclusive presence of these pieces on the antique and collector's market.

Signatures and identification of De Bruyn ceramics

De Bruyn pieces are generally marked on the base, with several variations depending on the period:

  • mention "Fives-Lille"
  • signature "De Bruyn" or "G. De Bruyn"
  • embossed stamp with initials or symbol (The De Bruyn logo is a D intertwined with a B, in the center of a boat anchor)
  • associated model number

Some signatures may appear in relief in the material, particularly on slipware pieces, and sometimes accompanied by the mention MADE IN FRANCE.

Identification can also be made by style: floral relief decorations, vibrant colors, and characteristic shapes of late 19th-century production.
