Pair of early 20th century Japanese Satsuma vases – polychrome and gilt decoration with figures – workshop signature – 31 cm
Superb pair of Japanese Satsuma-type ceramic vases, probably dating from the early 20th century, hand-decorated in the tradition of Japanese export workshops.
Each vase features rich polychrome and gilded decoration depicting characters inspired by traditional Japanese figures (Rakan / dignitaries type), surrounded by finely worked geometric and floral motifs. The whole is enhanced with burnished gold gilding offering subtle reflections depending on the light.
The characteristic cracked glaze and the slightly raised work (raised enamels and pointillism) attest to quality craftsmanship.
The bases bear a Japanese workshop signature in the form of a cartouche, typical of Satsuma productions intended for export at the end of the Meiji era or the beginning of the Taishō era. Depending on the angle of the light, this signature may appear dark when viewed straight on and reveal golden reflections in grazing light, a characteristic phenomenon of the use of burnished gold in traditional decorations.
Traditional symbolic motifs, including a stylized mon, also reinforce the decorative richness of the set.
